Herman is a sweet boy who had a rough start in life. He had a HUGE growth on his back left foot which was terribly infected. We took him to our vet where he received antibiotics for his infected foot. X-rays revealed that the growth had basically ruined the structure of his foot, so amputation was the only viable option. The vet estimates that the growth must have been there for many months, perhaps even more than a year. Herman's leg was amputated, and that made a great difference for him. No evidence of cancer or anything else serious has been found, so Herman should be able to live a long and healthy life from here on out.

Herman is sweet and friendly, and doesn't let the fact that he has only 3 legs stop him. He moves around very well whether inside the house or climbing up the big slate stairs in our yard. He gets along well with all of our other dogs, and he is safe with chickens. Herman enjoys time in the yard, but he also appreciate being able to come in the house, especially during summer heat. He will nap in one of the open crates, and seems to appreciate the privacy that a crate provides. But he gets a little anxious if you close him in the crate. We DO close the crate door for short periods, just to help condition him to accept it, because you never know when it's going to be important for a dog to be crated. There are so many circumstances when crate-training is helpful, so while we don't force anything on Herman (or any other dog), we do like to work with them to accept the crate as a safe place.

Herman really enjoys the company of other big white dogs, so he would probably not be a good choice as someone's only dog. But he also likes the company of humans, so this is not a dog to put outside and ignore.

If Herman looks and sounds like the perfect addition to your family, please submit your application today!
