In late 2022, a family of 7 Akbash dogs were found as strays in Emory, Texas - 2 adults and 5 pups. Trapper was thought to be the dad of the pups. He and Maria (the mom) are VERY friendly dogs, but the pups (who were estimated to be about 6 months old at the time) were completely unsocialized -- basically feral pups. The pups had to be trapped in order to be brought into rescue, but Trapper willingly jumped in the SUV to go on his next adventure.

Trapper is a big, friendly boy who loves attention and is very social. In our preliminary introductions, Trapper seemed to have the wrong kind of interest in our livestock. It may just be that he's young and too hyper, but it may be that he has a prey drive that's too high for consideration as a livestock guardian. Accordingly, he is available for adoption ONLY as a pet/companion dog.

He has been very good with all the many dogs he has met during his time with us, and he showed good manners with the cats he met on his trips to the vet clinic. He LOVES treats, which helps in training, and like all Akbash dogs, Trapper is very smart. Also like most Akbash dogs, he's stubborn, and at almost 100 lbs, when he plants his butt to the ground and doesn't want to go -- through the door, into a vehicle, onto the scale, whatever! -- you have to be at least as stubborn as he is. Treats help to convince him to do as you ask.

We think Trapper could be a great companion for someone with an active life -- daily walks, hikes in the woods, maybe camping trips. Like all dogs of LGD breeds, we don't recommend allowing him off-leash except inside areas with secure fencing, because he CAN run! At Windsong Ranch, we can let him off-leash in an area that's a couple acres with 5' tall fencing, and watching him run is an amazing thing! But he is VERY people-oriented, so he will run then come and check back in with us, then run some more. Trapper is just an all-around great dog who deserves the best home imaginable!
